Launched in March 1970 and based on the DS platform, the SM had the misfortune to be born in a difficult period for large cars. Developed in part with Maserati, the SM was particularly ahead of its time, with a remarkable design and a hydropneumatic suspension system dear to the firm with the chevrons. Although its powertrain may appear to have been derived directly from the Maserati Indy's V8, from which two cylinders had been removed, it turns out that the production SM's engine was developed from a blank sheet of paper. With 6 cylinders in a V-shape, the SM's engine developed 170 hp at 5500 rpm on carburettor-equipped 1970 to 1972 models. Equipped with four disc brakes with hydraulic control and assistance, Diravi power steering, directional headlamps and a CX of just 0.339, the SM had everything to succeed! Unfortunately, the oil crisis and the reliability problems encountered by the SM put an end to its career in 1975, after only 12,920 examples had been built.
The Citroën SM presented here is a carbureted version in original condition, with an original mileage of 72,600 kms. The silver-tinted exterior paintwork perfectly highlights its sublime lines.
The vehicle underwent a mechanical restoration at the specialist Atelier Automobile for over 17,000 euros. It should be noted that the timing chains and their tensioners were replaced during this work, details of which are available on request.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an example of this iconic Citroën.
