1987 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI - Lot 23
1987 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI Serial number WVWZZZ19ZHW613071 French registration A true icon of the '80s, the Golf 1 Gti left a lasting impression. On September 11, 1975, the Frankfurt Motor Show opened its doors with a major attraction on the Volkswagen stand: the Golf GTI. "The fastest Volkswagen ever". It's going to be a bombshell. The Golf GTI, the idol of an entire generation, was a revolution in the automotive industry. Volkswagen, accustomed to curves with its Beetle, decided to follow the aesthetic standards of the time by creating a compact, sober car with taut, slightly aggressive lines. But where Volkswagen really came into its own was when it invented the name GTI: Grand Tourisme à Injection. Success was rapid and consistent, but by the early 1980s, sales were gradually running out of steam. GTI enthusiasts demanded more than the little 1600cm3 8-valve model. That's why VAG France, with no real agreement with Wolfsburg, decided to offer that little extra that customers had been asking for. In partnership with Oettinger, VAG France was to produce 1,250 examples of the now famous "16S"! Sold for 75,000 francs in 1982, the GTI was fitted with a new 16-valve cylinder head, giving it 136 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. The 0 to 100 was now achieved in less than 8 seconds! Aesthetics were not left out either, with a full BBS kit including a front blade, fender and rocker panel wideners, 14-inch ATS Cup wheels and, above all, a 16-valve sticker on the front fender! The interior featured special meters and additional pressure gauges. The 1987 Golf GTI 16S presented here was delivered new in France in March of the same year. A true icon of the 80s, this sporty version of the Golf stands out for its versatility and dynamic character, which have left their mark on the history of sporty compacts. With 226,304 km to its credit, it has been driven regularly and remains in good overall condition. Having had 7 owners, it found its current owner in 2021, who has preserved the authenticity of this iconic GTI. Battery warning light comes on unexpectedly. Marketed as "the fastest Volkswagen of all time," it caused a sensation. The Golf GTI, the idol of an entire generation, was a genuine revolution in the automotive industry. Volkswagen, known for its rounded designs like the Beetle, decided to embrace the aesthetic standards of the time by creating a compact, understated car with taut lines and a slightly aggressive stance. However, what truly set Volkswagen apart was its invention of the GTI designation: Grand Tourisme Injection. Success came quickly and abundantly, but by the early 1980s, sales began to decline. Enthusiasts craved more than the modest 1600 cm³ 8-valve engine. As a response, VAG France, without a formal agreement with Wolfsburg, decided to offer the little extra that customers were requesting.
