Title in a fine woodcut frame. 4 ff., 546 pp., 11 ff. illustrated with 74 engravings in the text. First edition of this historical and anthropological essay on funeral rites since antiquity. The dedication to the Duke of Savoy, whose historiographer Guichard was, is printed in civil type. The wood-engraved illustrations by Cruche and Eskricheus include an architecturally framed title and thirty-six figures (two vignettes and twenty-three antique coins), as well as elegant bands and initials (several of large size).This book is one of the first to cover funeral practices in the Americas (Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Florida and Santo Domingo). It also contains the only record of the destruction of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the discovery of King Mausoleus' sarcophagus by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem in the mid-16th century.
