Title with fleuron bearing the Dauphin's coat of arms, 118 etched vignettes by François Chauveau. ORIGINAL EDITION OF THE FIRST SIX BOOKS, the privilege of which was shared between Barbin and Thierry. A carefully restored copy. "La Fontaine teaches us to know life, not to be dupes; he corrects us for ridiculous or odious foibles; he shows that it is in our interest not to let ourselves be blinded by vanity, ambition, greed... The Fables were a great success. Before 1668, not a single fable was to be found in the collective collections of poetry, whether handwritten or printed. After 1668, they're everywhere" (Grente). "The Fables of 1668 mark a milestone in the history of the genre... This masterpiece earned him a place alongside the leading exponents of French classicism. The success was immediate and well-deserved, as evidenced by the fact that an in-12 edition went on sale in the same year as the in-4 edition" (In French in the text).
