Claude by Maurice de La Porte, 1541. In-12... - Lot 54 - Osenat
Claude by Maurice de La Porte, 1541. In-12 18th-century red morocco, ribbed spine decorated in the grotesque style, three gilt fillets on the covers, gilt edges. 264 pp. Very rare edition of this famous collection of poems, whose virulent, sometimes coarse tone is directed against women. It was written by Gratien du Pont, lord of Drusac and lieutenant in the seneschal of Toulouse. In this book, whose subject was apparently inspired by his painful separation from his wife, Du Pont collected various anti-feminist poems, ballads and epistles, and even included accounts of strange crimes committed by women. His Controverses enumerate, in an allegorical framework, with cynical verve, all the grievances of man against woman, perfidious, inconstant, etc., who "never was profitable to man"; Drusac uses all the resources of erudition and the art of rhetoric [...] (Grente, Dictionnaire des lettres françaises). The edition, available from several Parisian booksellers, is illustrated with 108 woodcut vignettes in two different styles. Each of the three books that make up the work has its own title adorned with a vignette. Pierre Sergent's typographical mark appears on the verso of the last leaf (Renouard, n°1035). A very fine copy, from the Girardot de Préfond, La Roche Lacarelle and Jean-Paul Barbier libraries.
