BOINDIN (Nicolas): Le Bal d'Auteuil, comedy.... - Lot 24 - Osenat
BOINDIN (Nicolas): Le Bal d'Auteuil, comedy. Ribou, 1702. In-12 contemporary vellum, 74 pp. (paper a little browned, worm gallery in lower margin of second half of vol.). Son of a royal prosecutor in the finance department, admirer of Fontenelle (who brought light to men), Boindin caused a scandal by openly displaying his "incrédulité" (atheism). His play "Le bal à Auteuil" was deemed indecent. The Marquis de Gesure was commissioned by the king to reprimand the actors who had performed it. The play is withdrawn. This is traditionally said to be the origin of theatrical censorship. A good copy of this unusual book.
