First French expedition to Antarctica led by Commandant Jean-Baptiste Etienne Auguste CHARCOT (1867-1936) aboard a three-masted schooner 'Le Français', circa August 22, 1903 to March 4, 1905. First wintering of a scientific expedition to the poles (after the Belgian de Gerlache on the Belgica). Exceptional set of over thirty negative glass plates and several positive paper prints. Subjects: polar expedition, glaciers, penguins, boats, the team and portrait of Jean-Baptiste Charcot. On the fronts of several plates, dates and captions. Examples: "À bord du 'Français' le 11 Janvier 1903 - les îlots de la Bécasse - Canal du Beagle - Terre de Feu - PP", "île Wandel 21/02.04", "Une route de glace - Falaises Ouest de l'île Wandel 18 Nov 1904", "La cabane du pendu (...) 20 Juin 1904", portraits of expedition members, landing, etc. Various states, medium sizes approx. 45x107 mm and 13x18 cm.
