1972 Volkswagen Type 181 - Lot 75
1972 Volkswagen Type 181
No reserve
Chassis 1822215530
Same owner for 46 years
Valid MOT 08/03/24
Collection registration
Launched in 1968 as a military version, the Volkswagen 181 is a light vehicle designed for troop transport. It was notably adopted by NATO, which ordered 50,000 examples. Like its ancestor, the Kubelwagen, the 181 uses the same mechanical elements as the Beetle.
Building on this success, Volkswagen launched a civilian version in 1971, designed to compete with the Renault Rodeo and Citroën Mehari in the beach car segment. Unlike the two aforementioned models, the 181 has a sheet metal body and 4 removable doors.
This model was delivered new on 14/01/1972 by Garage de L'est Seine in Saint Maur. Acquired in 1978 by its current owner, this 181 was used for over 40 years as a secondary car in the Gard region.
In its original condition, the bodywork is in need of repair. The interior appears to be complete. The mechanics could do with an overhaul before hitting the road again.
The answer to the Buggys, Renault Rodéo and Citroën Méhari, the 181 is a fine alternative to the aforementioned models and is ideal for summer use.
