When the Ford Motors Company brought the Ford Mustang to market, it created a niche where there was as yet no competition. Young Americans in the midst of the American Way of Life were not really interested in sedans. The Ford Mustang's indestructible image was forged by the launch of a GT car at a very competitive price, backed up by an extensive marketing campaign and a commitment to competing with the best.
In 1965, Ford launched a new, sportier body: the Fastback, recognizable by its sweeping rear lines. It was the most desirable body on a Mustang, a statement that still holds true 60 years after its launch.
The example we present is a standard Fastback equipped with the 225hp 289 ci v8, long 4-speed manual gearbox, disc brakes and 3.00 axle.
It was built on 25/02/1965, in Caspian blue with blue interior and Rallye Pack. This configuration is still in use today.
The DSO tells us that this Mustang is an export model. In fact, it's a rare 1965 Mustang Fastback sold new in France, as confirmed by the nameplate under the hood. Ford France imported Mustangs on a one-off basis, with the approval of the parent company.
As a result, they were sold at a much higher price than in the USA. Indeed, heavy import taxes and Ford France's commission made the mustang a very exclusive car in France.
On 05/28/1965, our Mustang was sold new at the Dubos dealership in Chelles, owned by our collector. According to the collector, this first owner kept it for some thirty years. In 1991, our mustang reappeared at the dealership, its owner wanting to trade it in for a newer car. Mr Dubos immediately recognized the car and bought it back. Since then, it has never left the collection, regularly taking part in events and rallies.
Today, this Mustang has a beautiful patina and is in fine original condition. We were able to enjoy the V8's vocals on the drive from the family dealership to Fontainebleau. The combination of a manual gearbox and disc brakes makes this a particularly pleasant car to drive.
