NAPOLÉON I. - Lot 14
NAPOLÉON I. Letter signed "Np" to Jean-Jacques Régis CAMBACERES. Ebersdorf [near Vienna], May 31, 1809. One p. in-4. Marshal Jean Lannes, Duc de Montebello, had just died on May 31, 1809 from wounds received at the battle of Essling on May 22. "MY COUSIN, THE DUKE OF MONTEBELLO DIED THIS MORNING. I beg you to call M. Guéheneuc [the marshal's father-in-law] and tell him. I'm writing to Munich and Strasbourg so that if the duchess is on her way, she will be prevented from going any further. Have letters patent given to her eldest son. THE DUKE OF MONTEBELLO PERISHED LESS FROM HIS INJURIES THAN FROM A PERNICIOUS FEVER which joined the illness. He was assisted in his last hours by Dr. Frank [the famous Viennese physician Johann Peter Frank]... P.S. You will find enclosed a letter which you will have delivered to Mr. Guéheneuc who will give it to the Duchess when the time comes." As Archchancellor of the Empire, Cambacérès was responsible for the effective conduct of day-to-day business while the Emperor was away in the armies; and as President of the Conseil du Sceau des Titres, he signed acts concerning the transmission of titles of nobility.
