REVOLUTIONARY VOLUNTEER OFFICER SABER CHASSEUR A CHEVAL STYLE. Gilt bronze mounting. Basane-covered handle with filigree. Long-tailed lion cap. Guard with branches and shell, decorated with horn, trophies of arms and laurel. Curved blade with flat back, counter-edge and hollow sides, in damascus, with cartouche engraved on the heel. Leather scabbard with two brass fittings, embossed with trophies, sun and interlacing, with two rings. Engraved on the cap: "Les officiers du 3ème Regt de chasseurs à cheval à leur colonel Mr le comte de Menou-Toul le 1er janvier 1792". A.B.E. Partly from the revolutionary period, gilded, later attribution. Historical background: On October 21, 1791, Jacques de MENOU de BOUSSAY was appointed colonel of the 12th regiment of mounted chasseurs. On May 8, 1792, he was promoted to Marshal of Camp. Jacques François de BOUSSAY, baron de MENOU (1750-1810) French general Deputy of the nobility in 1789, he fought in the Vendée before being appointed General-in-Chief of the Army of the Interior (1795). He succeeded Kléber in Egypt Egypt (June 1800) and, with the surrender of Alexandria, brought the the army back to France.
