RIPOLL" FLINTLOCK PISTOL. Round barrel with muzzle bead and thunderbolt, line-engraved in the middle. Engraved breech tail. Miquelet" flat-bodied lock with cut-out, with punch mark. Plain hammer foot and bassinet. Hammer jaws decorated with small pearls around the rim. Steel trigger guard. Beautifully chased brass fittings with foliate scrolls. Pommel decorated and engraved with a flower and arabesques. Breech end and back of stock adorned with cut-out and daylight brass trim. Walnut stock with ball knob. Iron belt hook. Brass-tipped brass ramrod. B.E. Spain. Circa 1740-1800. History: The harquebusiers of Ripoll (Spain) developed pistols with spherical pommels so characteristic of the region that they still bear the town's name today. The "Miquelet" lock is of Spanish origin (and was also used in Italy).
