. MONET (Claude). Autograph letter signed "Claude Monet" to his "dear friend". Giverny (Eure), September 12, 1899. 3 pp. in-8, mourning border. "We are sorry not to be able to see you on Thursday, and I beg you to express my regrets to Mr. Koechlin, but we are in the process of preparing to leave. Marthe, as you know, is leaving for America with the children and Butler. [Alice Raingo, Claude Monet's wife, had several children from her first marriage to Ernest Hoschedé, including Suzanne and Marthe. Suzanne married the American painter Theodore Butler in 1892, had two children, James and Lilly, but died in February 1899. Marthe helped Theodore Butler raise the orphans, then married him in 1900]. You can guess everyone's grief... It's Friday they're leaving us, and as it's imperative to distract the poor mother, I've decided to travel a little. So I'm taking her and Germaine [Alice's other daughter] to England first, and from there to St-Servan [near Saint-Malo] via Southampton and Jersey, as it would have been too hard to suddenly find ourselves alone at home... Here I am again, unable to think of any work, which saddens me greatly...".
