CONSTANT (Benjamin). Adolphe, anecdote found in the papers of an unknown man. London: H. Colburn. Paris, Treuttel & Würtz, 1816. In-12, vii-(one blank)-228 pp., paperback in paperback covers with printed label on spine; volume in burgundy morocco spine folder with multiple gilt fillets framing entrenerfs and boards, interior framing in same filleted leather, burgundy moire linings, lined slipcase; title with foxed margins and trace of collette at center with ink inscription restoring the word "par", angular paper loss, one bifeuillet detached, old note in ink at bottom of last page, slightly rubbed slipcase (Creuzevault). FIRST FRENCH EDITION, ISSUED ONE WEEK AFTER THE ORIGINAL ENGLISH EDITION; a copy with the characteristics of the second state. Published in Paris around June 15, 1816, this edition was printed on the presses of the Parisian printer Georges-Adrien Crapelet (Courtney, no. 18b), in two states, and based on the proofs of the original edition published just before in London around June 7. Both the original London edition and the two states of the Paris edition are extremely rare.
