EXTREMELY RARE AND SUPERB OFFICER'S SABER OF THE GRENADIERS - Lot 104
EXTREMELY RARE AND SUPERB OFFICER'S SABER OF THE GRENADIERS A CHEVAL DE LA GARDE DES CONSULS BY LIEUTENANT JEAN VARNOUT. Chagrin-covered wooden handle with copper filigree. Rich ormolu mount, profusely decorated in high relief. Short-tailed cap chased in high relief, topped by a lion's head camouflaging the rivet, encircled by an eight-sided ring featuring seven stars, skirt adorned with flowers and a superb palm leaf. Five-point hilt and magnificent chased ormolu shell, featuring a flaming pomegranate in the center against a spider's web background. The four arms extending from the main branch are adorned with chased rooster heads and end in scrolled rosettes adorned with foliage. Superb quillon in the shape of an eagle's head, chased in the round and curved towards the tip. Sumptuous damask, rushback blade, engraved "Manufacture d'armes de Klingenthal Couleaux Frères", with counter-edge and hollow sides, gold background in the upper third; marked in gilded cartouches, on one side, "Garde des Consuls, Grenadiers à cheval" and, on the other side, the lieutenant's initials "J.V" interlaced on a blued background. The ensemble is embellished with trophies of arms, helmets, lictor beams, oak leaves, laurel leaves, rushes, feathers, pine cones and plumes. Wooden scabbard covered in black chagrin, with two large ormolu fittings, profusely and richly chased in relief with trophies, geometric decorations, flowers, foliage, pearls, ribbons, mace, axe, flowers, and lictor beam with gadroons towards the base resting on a lion's paw. Strong iron sting decorated with a rosette of foliage. The two bracelets are adorned with water-leaf and pearl friezes, with melon-ribbed pitons and gilded rings en suite. Very good condition. Consulate period. This saber, a true objet d'art, among the richest regulation sabers of the French cavalry, is undoubtedly the rarest and most luxurious saber to be found from this era. All those who worked on this objet d'art were among the finest craftsmen and artists of their time.
