EUGENE DE BEAUHARNAIS (1781-1824), French Prince, Viceroy of Italy, son of Alexandre and Joséphine de Beauharnais. Napoleon made him viceroy of Italy on June 7, 1805, in Milan. He married Augusta-Amélie (1788-1851), daughter of the new King of Bavaria, and was adopted by the Emperor as Eugène Napoléon, recognizing his right to the Italian crown in the absence of direct Napoleonic heirs (January 12 and February 16, 1806), with the title of Prince of Venice (March 30, 1806, and December 20, 1807). When the Empire fell, he lived in Bavaria under the protection of his father-in-law, the King of Bavaria, with a title (Duke of Leuchtenberg) and an apanage (principality of Eichstätt) that placed him immediately after the royal family. Prematurely aged by the circumstances of his life, Prince Eugène died of apoplexy in Munich in his forty-third year, on February 21, 1824. NICOLAS DE LEUCHTENBERG Duke, Prince of Eichstätt, born 07/23/1843, died 12/25/1896. Grandson of Eugène de Beauharnais and son of Maximilien de Leuchtenberg, Prince of Eichstätt (1817-1852) and the Grand Duchess of Russia, Marie Nicholiava Romanov.
