One p. in-4; modern note in Italian in red ink in upper margin; 2 angular misses, traces of glue on verso. "My departure from Lisieux did not allow me until very late to receive the letter that you did me the honor of writing to me in the name of your illustrious society. I am deeply grateful for the grace it has shown me in treating me as one of its members. A health problem has not allowed me to work as much as I would have liked. So, Count, I will only be able to send you two memoirs in the course of July and August, which I believe I can attach to the first. You will find attached to this letter an addition which I have judged necessary, and which it will be easy to insert in the place I have indicated. You may rest assured, Sir, that I shall believe myself to be very happy all my life to have made science my principal occupation, since it gives me the honor of counting a man like you among my friends. You have allowed me to treat you accordingly, and you will not think it amiss if, in order to comply with your orders, I end by embracing you with all my heart..."
