PAIR OF FINE AUBUSSON TAPESTRIES FROM THE... - Lot 145 - Osenat
PAIR OF FINE AUBUSSON TAPESTRIES FROM THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY, FRANCE One depicts Erato, one of the nine Muses of Greek mythology. She is the muse of lyrical and erotic poetry, daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne. She carries a lyre in her hand, or a small ancient zither (Apollo's favorite instrument). Erato married Phlegyas and had a daughter Coronis, who, loved by Apollo, gave birth to Asclepios, the god of medicine. Erato is surrounded by two columns, on which stand two cherubs with musical instruments and a pastel-toned wreath border. The other depicts Calliope, Erato's sister and one of the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne from Greek mythology. She is the muse of epic poetry, song and the first of the nine muses. Attributes: golden crown, book and stylus. She is framed by two columns with two cherubs. Pastel-toned wreath border. Cartons inspired by decorator Claude Audran III, from the neuf muses series. In wool and silk. 263 x 194 cm (Good condition)
