JEAN-BAPTISTE LEPRINCE (METZ 1734 - LAGNY... - Lot 242 - Osenat
JEAN-BAPTISTE LEPRINCE (METZ 1734 - LAGNY SUR MARNE 1781) Gentleman seated in an interior outfit raising his left arm. Sanguine and estompe. Stamp of the Emile Wauters collection in the lower left corner. H. 32 x W. 20 cm (Small stains and pitting). Provenance : Former Emile Wauters collection, his stamp at lower left (L.912) - Sold at the auction on June 15-16, 1926, lot 214 "JEAN BAT. THE PRINCE, Seated figure raising his left hand. Sanguine. - Height 32, width 20 cent." Our sheet is to be compared with the various studies of figures that make up the drawn corpus of this painter; in particular two drawings of men in oriental dress (Millon & associés, Dessins anciens et modernes, 29/06/2012 lot n°72 and Christie's, 08/10/1976, n°201) and the seated woman currently preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper (INV. 873-2-43). These drawings are characteristic of Leprince's style, who uses sanguine generously in strong contrasts with the areas of reserve, with a bold line that is not very strong and numerous hatchings.
