DAVOUT (LOUIS-NICOLAS). - Lot 117
DAVOUT (LOUIS-NICOLAS). Autograph letter signed to his wife Aimée Leclerc. Labiau [between Kœnigsberg and Tilsit, now Polessk in Russia, between Kaliningrad and Sovietsk], June 16 [1807]. 2 pp. 1/2 in-4. "It has been impossible for me, my little Aimée, to give you news for lack of opportunity. My last one is from the 12th; I recommended you the greatest confidence in my fortune, well it has not even been put to the test. The 3rd Corps did not have the opportunity to fight and probably will not have any more, THE MEMORABLE BATTLE OF FRIEDLAND HAVING STOPPED THE RUSSIANS FROM DELIVERING A SECOND ONE WITHOUT THE CHANCE OF LOSING IT ALL. I have the greatest confidence in the combat which you have to support perhaps at the time when I write to you [Aimée was going to give birth on June 21 of a girl, Adèle, future countess of Cambaceres], but I wish to know the result under the report of your health. I fear your imagination and I admit that in the situation in which you found yourself, so painful when one is distant from one's husband, the fears that the news of the resumption of the hostilities undoubtedly give, must have only too much provided means to torment you with your imagination. THIS VICTORY OF FRIEDLAND, THE CAPTURE OF KÖNISBERG, THE TOTAL DEFEAT OF THE RUSSIAN ARMY WILL BRING BACK OUR ENEMIES AND THE FRENCH TO A PEACE WHICH THE MODERATION OF OUR SOVEREIGN WILL GIVE THEM MORE ADVANTAGEOUS THAN THEY COULD HOPE FOR. Thus everything announces that in the course of the summer I will have the happiness of being reunited with the most esteemed and beloved of women. I am looking forward to making the acquaintance of our Josephine [their eldest daughter, born in 1804] and she can count on a lot of complaisance and caresses, having a great desire to acquire her good graces. Since my departure from Osterode, I have not heard from you. A thousand tender words to your good mother, a thousand and one caresses to our Josephine. Receive hugs and kisses from your good and faithful husband L. Davout Everything that interests you is going well, and I HAVE GIVEN FURTHER PROOF THAT FATIGUES FORTIFY MY HEALTH. LETTER WRITTEN ON THE OVERWEEK OF THE VICTORY OF FRIEDLAND BY NAPOLEON I AND ON THE HOLIDAY OF THE TAKE OF KÖNIGSBERG BY DAVOUT, MURAT AND SOULT. Severely tested by previous engagements, notably at Eylau, Marshal Davout's 3rd corps was incorporated as a back-up to Napoleon I's force, and took no part in the fighting at Friedland on June 14, 1807 against General Bennigsen's Russian army. On the other hand, alongside Marshals Murat and Soult, he took part in the capture of Königsberg on June 15, 1807, a city that the Prussian general Lestocq and the Russian general Kamenski abandoned after the announcement of the French victory at Friedland.
