1970 - Lot 25
1970 GHEZZI SE Class Type : Competition catamaran HB Length : 4,40 m Width : 2,10 m Weight : approx. 250 kg Number of seat(s) : 1 Engine : Mercury Model: Merc 1000 Type : 6 cylinders in line Power : 100 hp. The Ghezzi shipyard is an ancient establishment in Boretto, located on the banks of the River Po for generations and specialized in workboats, fishing boats and transport boats, a tradition in this region bathed by this vital economic artery. The company was therefore in the front row for motorboat competitions, an activity that it added to its utility specialization in the 1960s. Not content with entering the arena with monohulls, Ghezzi took the plunge at the beginning of the 1970s by producing a few rare examples of racing catamarans for outboard motors. The name of the shipyard is on the list of participants in the famous Pavia-Venezia race in 1973 in several categories including the SE. This model is typical of the design of Italian catamarans of the period in very simple and effective techniques. Their refined aesthetics reflect a constant search for weight savings. It should be remembered that the catamaran formula represents in its time, an essential revolution to shine in competition, as was the advent of the three-point hull a few decades earlier. The low drag of their thin hulls gives the catamaran a decisive advantage at a given power, but the first attempts, developed empirically, have a random aerodynamic behavior, tending to take off from the water, which makes their piloting at high speed particularly delicate. Its classic Mercury 1000 two-stroke 100 hp engine from the late 1960s was prepared for racing with ventilation holes on the sides of the aluminum cowling, a rudder bar for cable steering, a short shaft, and a race-style baseplate.
