1957 RIVA Scoiattolo Type : Dinghy Length... - Lot 8 - Osenat
1957 RIVA Scoiattolo Type : Dinghy Length : 4,12 m Width : 1,50 m Weight : 195 kg Number of seat(s) : 4 Engine : Evinrude Model: Big Twin Type : 2-stroke twin cylinder Displacement: 590 cm3 Power : 25 hp. When Carlo Riva decided, against his father's advice, to start building boats in series from the small family factory in Sarnico in 1950, outboard propulsion was mainly reserved for competition hulls or a few utility boats. Later, the international success of the Riva runabouts, "the boat of the stars", left little room for the study of the smallest model in the range. However, the decision to integrate an outboard boat at the beginning of the firm's expansion was not taken at random. Both bold and cautious, Carlo Riva did not want to deprive himself of the regular income from a less ambitious unit, but one that would help spread his reputation and attract potential buyers of larger boats of the brand. In 1950, five units sold to companies were the trial run for a production that would count a total of 137 units until 1957, the last year of presence in the catalog. The vast majority of the boats sold were powered by Evinrude or Johnson 25 hp engines. The model continued to sell well and regularly, even abroad, but the shipyard's priority was to constantly move upmarket. As a comparison, the price list for the same year 1957 proposes the small Scoiattolo outboard at 530,000 lire, the single-engine Ariston at 3,950,000 lire and the twin-engine Tritone at 8,360,000 lire. The copy n°123 is therefore one of the last produced, delivered new to a certain Mr. Casini. Found decades later, without engine, on the Riviera, it was entirely restored at the end of the 1990s by the Pasqui shipyard of Villefranche-sur-Mer for Jean Van Praet. Equipped with an Evinrude Big Twin engine in a 25 hp version equivalent to the original one, with a handle launch, this Scoiattolo then participated in various historical gatherings, including the famous Riva millennium meeting, at the shipyard in 2000 in Sarnico. This festive return to Lake Iseo is an opportunity to pay tribute to this Riva of an unusual model that is placed on a trailer of the French brand OLD of the same period.
