French school of the 19th century Pastel representing Louis Joseph Bénigne de La Haye-Saint-Hilaire (1766-1838) Provenance: Count Lionel de La Haye Saint-Hilaire Wooden frame and gilded stucco with palmettes. 57 x 46.5 cm In 1793 Louis La Haye-Saint-Hilaire informed the Catholic and royal army that the reinforcements of the emigrants from Jersey and England were prevented from landing on the French coasts, because the English demanded that the Vendéans had first taken a port. This connection was the cause of the Virée de Galerne of the Catholic and Royal Army of the Vendée and the failed siege of Granville.
