Very beautiful plates, rare and of a beautiful coloring. Nicolas Hoffmann, born in 1740 in Darmstadt, lived in Paris from 1775 to 1808. He had come there to provide the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt with plates representing the French uniforms that he observed. In addition to these unique works for his master, Hoffmann produced numerous plates that he had printed in black and white and then colored himself with gouache and gold and silver highlights. He sold them and the National Library has several volumes and individual plates. The first collection "Maison du Roi et des Princes" contains several of the plates found in the copy we offer (Glasser pages 185-188). This one must have been made in the 19th century from individual plates that an amateur had been able to obtain. In particular, it includes five plates representing the gate guards "in situation" at the Château de Versailles.
