Attributed to Martin Van MEYTENS (1695 -... - Lot 100 - Osenat
Attributed to Martin Van MEYTENS (1695 - 1770) Portrait of Archduke Joseph as a child, future emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) Canvas Height : 124 cm Width : 93 cm Joseph of Habsburg-Lorraine (1741 - 1790), is the son of François of Lorraine, to whom he succeeds in 1765 as co-regent of the Holy Roman Empire (emperor of the Romans), at the sides of his mother Marie-Thérèse of Austria, with the death of which he becomes fully king of Hungary, in 1780. His reformist policy was very much contested during his reign. He married Isabelle de Bourbon-Parme in 1760 to consolidate the alliance signed with France in 1756. When his wife died, he was left without a male heir and married Josépha of Bavaria in 1765. Two other portraits of him as a child painted by Martin van Meytens II are known, one in a private European collection and the other in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
