THE ENNOBLEMENT OF ONE OF THE DEFENDERS OF... - Lot 83 - Osenat
THE ENNOBLEMENT OF ONE OF THE DEFENDERS OF QUEEN MARIE ANTOINETTE Letters patent of ennoblement in the name of Nicolas François GUEROULT, former brigadier of the King's bodyguards. Superb coat of arms painted and enhanced with gold. Headings with the pen. Given in St Cloud on May 29, 1826. In its white metal case. With its green wax seal (wear) GUEROULT D'UBERVILLE (Nicolas François), born in Abbeville, September 17, 1768, was one of the bodyguards who, during the days of October 5 and 6, 1789, energetically resisted the multitude that came to outrage the royal family even in the palace of Versailles. Gueroult d'Uberville was returning from carrying an order; he made his way with effort through the groups that were storming the palace; he received a violent blow to the head and fell. But perceiving the danger which threatened the queen, whose name the crowd shouted while rushing towards her apartments, d'Uberville rises, reaches one of the doors of entry, which one opens to him from the interior and which one closes again in spite of the assailants. He went up into the antechamber of the queen, warned the women on duty, and the queen, who heard his story confirmed by the imprecations of the populace, rushed, half-dressed, towards the king's room, who at the same moment came by a concealed exit to the rescue of this princess. D'Uberville barricaded the doors with furniture, and with his sword in his hand led the king back to the apartment where the august family was gathered. D'Uberville, wounded and that his courage alone had supported, falls bloody at the feet of their majesties. The queen had him rescued and bandaged in the palace itself, where he underwent a trepan operation. Louis XVI named him knight of Saint Louis and brigadier of the bodyguards. The patent of the order mentions the importance of the service. The queen had her first maid, Mrs. Thibaut, write to him announcing that he had been granted a pension of 1,000 livres. This letter and the patent of nomination of knight of Saint-Louis attest this beautiful action, which one finds authentically announced in the documents of the investigation on the days of October, made to the Châtelet.
