CHEVILLARD (Jacques). Collection of 2 copper-engraved... - Lot 8 - Osenat
CHEVILLARD (Jacques). Collection of 2 copper-engraved works, with old color highlights (and some gum arabic applications), cut out and mounted on the paper leaves of a large in-4 volume, with handwritten titles; contemporary marbled basane, very worn with apparent restorations; a few stains, pencil lines on the verso of one leaf. RARE ARMORIAUX DE LA VILLE DE PARIS, collected under the general manuscript title "Prevosts des marchands, échevins, procureurs du roy, greffiers, receveurs, conseillers, quartiniers de la Ville de Paris. By Chevillard". Historiographer of France and genealogist of the king, draughtsman, engraver, publisher and print merchant, Jacques Chevillard published a great number of armorials, notably of the personnel of royal institutions, ecclesiastics, or the provinces and cities of France. - CHRONOLOGIE DES PREVOSTS DES MARCHANDS, échevins, procu[eu]rs du roy, greffiers, et receveurs de la ville de Paris. In Paris, by the author, [circa 1729]. Approximately 800 coats of arms presented mainly in chronological order from the 13th to the early 18th century, with text labels, all applied to 38 pages: dedicated to the provost of the merchants Charles Boucher d'Orsay (died 1714), the work was continued until 1729 when Michel-Étienne Turgot was received in his turn as provost of the merchants. - LES NOMS, QUALITEZ, ARMES ET BLASONS DE MESSIEURS LES CON[SEILL]ERS de la Ville de Paris, comme ils estoient 1500, et leur succession chronologique jusqu'à présent. [Circa 1728]. Approximately 630 coats of arms presented mainly in chronological order, with text cartels, all applied on 33 ff. A second part, with a handwritten title, concerns the "quartiniers", who were among the councillors of the City of Paris. It is difficult to say whether the coats of arms of France and Paris in the introduction to the two series are really part of them. Bound afterwards, alphabetical nominal tables (50 pp. manuscript). The present engraved works correspond to those listed by Gaston Saffroy under numbers 24992 and 24993 of his bibliography (vol. II), but the copies he had been able to consult stopped respectively in 1708 and 1716, contrary to those gathered here, continued respectively until 1729 and 1728.
