At the time of return of Louis XIV, she was exiled for a while in her castle of Saint-Fargeau, where she wrote famous Memoirs. Back in grace, she conceived a late but unreasonable passion for the future duke of Lauzun, a colorful man, equally brave and colorful man, similarly courageous and carried away, already twice imprisoned for insolences towards the king. In front of the protests which arose from all parts against this mésalliance, Louis XIV quickly withdrew his permission and, a few months after, made lock up Lauzun in the Bastille then in Pignerol. La Grande Mademoiselle finally obtained his release after nine years (1681), secretly married him, but broke up with him in 1684 after a short marital life of violence and infidelity. She lived her last years in devotion. ONE OF THE GREAT FIGURES OF JANSENISM, ROBERT ARNAUD ANDILLY (1589-1674) had had been in the service of Gaston d'Orléans in 1625-1626. Dismissed following a cabal, he had been compensated by the duke, and duke, and had remained obliged of it.
