CHARLES V. Handwritten act signed by his secretary Berthault François. Paris, October 15, 1364. 1 p. narrow oblong folio (about 35 x 12 cm) on parchment, seal missing. "Charles by the grace of God king of France. A nos amez & feaulz les generauls a Paris sur le fait des aides ordenez pour la delivrance de nos tres-cher seigneur et pere que Dieux absoille, salut & dilection [to be able to pay the ransom of his father king John II, a prisoner of the English after the battle of Poitiers in 1356, king Charles V, then regent, had instituted in 1360 the tax of "aides"]. We mandate you that by Jehan, bailiff general, receiver of the ten aids, you will give and deliver to the clerk of our works the sum of five cenz francs of gold to convert into certain buildings and works that we have ordered to be made in our chastel of the Louvre, and make sure that there is no fault; and by bringing back these presents and letter of acknowledgment of the said clerk of our works, we want the said sum to be allocated to the accounts and discounted from the receipt of the said Jehan, bailiff, by our friends & feaulz the people of our accounts without contradiction... " THE LOUVRE OF CHARLES V IN CONSTRUCTION. Remembering the Parisian riots of 1358, and wishing to create a place symbolically representative of royal power, Charles V ordered extensive modifications to the old tower built in the Louvre by Philip Augustus. This heavy work continued until around 1372.
