19TH CENTURY ENGLISH COAL CHEST made of relacquered sheet metal with cast iron feet and handles. Marked on the back with a seal " H. LOVERIDGE & CO WOLVERHAMPTON". This model called "The Saxon" is found in the "Loveridge" catalog of the 1890s. It is inspired by a curule stool with its crossed uprights with lion's head decorated with geometrical patterns, joined by a medallion with a rose and resting on claws. Round handles with gadroons circled with pearls. The chest in black lacquered sheet metal and decorated with gold geometric patterns. The lid with brass catch decorated with a flower reveals a removable bucket with two handles. A.B.E. Misses and resumptions to the lacquer and the gilding. H: 41 - W: 44 - D: 36,5 cm The company H. Loveridge is famous from the middle of the XIXth century for its technique of imitation of Japanese lacquers on metal, called japanning. We find the use of a similar seal in a patent registered on June 24, 1881.
