RARE SWORD-BEARER OF GENERAL OF DIVISION, IN THE ANTIQUE, HAVING BELONGED TO THE GENERAL JEAN HARDŸ (1762-1802), IN THE REGULATION OF THE YEAR VI. In brown morocco entirely covered with scarlet cloth, decorated with embroidery in thread, sequins and silver canetille decorated in border of two friezes embroidered in continuation of stylized foliage framing embroidered reasons in alternation: -Seven winged lightning bolts in relief and eight flowers, ending at one end of a large gusset to hold the sword, decorated in sequence in relief with winged lightning bolts and foliage. The entrance of the gusset is decorated with the remains of the "Lion of Nemea" (6.7 x 4 cm) and next to a rooster's head (5.7 x 5.5 cm), both in gilded brass, finely chased and cut. On the reverse side a buckle with two barbs, maintained by a white skin tab. At the other end a heavy plate in gilded brass formed by two crosspieces framing a space with a striated bottom ending in a point at the end. Total length unfolded: 170 cm. Width : 7 cm. B.E. Wear of use of rubbing to the embroidery, two moth holes; the embroidery of silver thread has blackened, some lacks to the cabochons of flowers. About 1799. Exhibition: Exposition historique et militaire de la Révolution et de l'Empire (1895), by Germain Bapst, #586 "Baudrier de général en chef du général Hardÿ". History: This type of harness is particularly rare. A few rare examples are preserved nowadays, with for the vast majority the embroidered lion and rooster head gusset motifs and not in gilded brass as for ours.
