GENERAL HARDŸ (1762-1802). Rare sword with the antique of general having belonged to the general of division HARDŸ by BOUTET, model of the Year VI (August 7, 1798) continued in the regulation of the 1st vendémiaire year XII (September 24, 1803). Brass mounting, gilded, chased, signed. Round pommel with seven wings surmounted by a leafy knob. Ebony handle, (slight crack at the base), fluted, decorated on both sides with winged staff tuns, in relief, cut out, resting on four nails, silver, cut out, inlaid. Ferrules decorated with laurel leaves and oak leaves. Guard with two strong straight quillons in the form of quivers filled with arrows, enriched on the sides of bows with strings, decorated with tassels with leonine tips and keyboard decorated on the front of a rooster and, on the back, a heron on a background amatis. Engraved under the quillons on the quiver "Manufre à Versailles", "Boutet Directeur Artiste". Beautiful straight blade with median edge and double hollow sides, white polished, engraved, gilded and blued to the ¼, signed at the heel "Klingenthal", on gold background, branch of foliage and trophies of arms in a gilded frame, foliage at the base. Sheet steel scabbard, blued and gilded, with seven gilded brass fittings, a chappe with chevron decoration, two winged bracelets with wolf's teeth decoration, two bracelets with oves decoration, a centered decoration with the eye of vigilance and a geometrically decorated bouterolle. This sword certainly comes from the armor of General HARDŸ and was described in a letter dated October 31, 1799 as: "a carbine, four pistols two pommel and two belt, a saber (sold in Fontainebleau in 2014), a sword". A.B.E. Steel scabbard with traces of oxidation and bluing partly faded. These Roman-style swords designed by Boutet were attributed to generals-in-chief and generals of division. Biography: Jean HARDŸ (1762-1802) He entered the service on September 22, 1783, as a soldier in the regiment of Monsieur- Infanterie, he became corporal in 1785, sergeant in 1786, and fourrier in 1787, he resigned on May 25, 1792. He resumed his service on September 23, 1792, as adjutant-major in the National Guard of Épernay, then captain in the 8th battalion of volunteers of the Marne. He fought at the battle of Valmy on September 20, 1792, and participated in the defense of Philippeville in October 1793. He was promoted to provisional brigadier general on November 16, 1793, and confirmed on January 27, 1794. In September 1796, he commanded the Marceau division, and distinguished himself in the battles of Nieder-Olm, Nieder-Ingelheim, Mont Saint-Roch on October 26, 1796, and Mont-Tonnerre. On November 26, 1796, he was wounded in the Hunsrück massif, then joined the Sambre-et-Meuse army as commander of Coblence. Designated for the army of England, he embarked on September 16, 1798 for the 2nd expedition to Ireland. He was taken prisoner on October 12, 1798 on board the ship Hoche, and was exchanged in December 1798. He was appointed Major General on July 30, 1799, and on August 22 he commanded the 6th division of the Helvetian army. He was wounded on December 1, 1800, at the battle of Ampfing. On October 31, 1801, he was appointed to join General Leclerc in the expedition to Saint-Domingue. He embarked in Brest on December 14, 1801, on the vessel La Révolution. After having disembarked on February 5, 1802, he commanded the northern division on the following March 31, and he obtained the submission of General Christophe at the end of April 1802.
