[MARTIN (Pierre). - IMPERIAL ALMANACH for... - Lot 7 - Osenat
[MARTIN (Pierre). - IMPERIAL ALMANACH for the year M. DCCC.VII. In Paris, at Testu, 1807. In-8, 868 pp, red long-grained morocco, smooth spine filleted with repeated bird's iron, gilt frieze of fillets and flowers au naturel with bird's iron at the corners, filleted lozenge in the center of the boards with text pushed in gilt letters : " ALMANACH IMPERIAL POUR L'AN M.DCCC.VII", on the first board, and "LE VICE AMIRAL MARTIN GRAND OFFICIER DE LA LEGION D'HONNEUR", on the second board, filleted edges, inner frame of same leather decorated with a frieze of palmettes, linings and endpapers of jonquil paper, gilt edges; leather largely stained, some small marginal spotting (period binding). BORN IN CANADA, AMIRAL PIERRE MARTIN (1752-1820) entered the Navy as a pilot in 1764. He served in the American War of Independence, then in the West Indies and Senegal where he was made a lieutenant (1792). He then served in the Mediterranean, reorganized the arsenal of Toulon after the recapture of the city by Napoleon Bonaparte (1793), and, at the head of the fleet, alternated between success and defeat. He quickly rose in rank until he became vice-admiral (1796). Shortly thereafter, he was assigned to the port of Rochefort where, from 1801, he was appointed Maritime Prefect. For a while he was made responsible for the affair known as "the burning of the ships" on the island of Aix (1809), but it was soon recognized that he had fulfilled his duties perfectly on this occasion. Napoleon I made him a count of the Empire in 1810.
