Autograph notes in the hand of Auguste de Montferrand at the edge of the pages in the volume of supplements of Perronet's works. The engineer Perronet was the initiator of the great public works which, in the XVIIIth century, allowed the economic development of France. He is most famous for his technical innovations in bridge construction, whose slender piers offer less resistance to water flow. This precious copy of this important book on architecture and bridge construction belonged to the architect Auguste Montferrand during the period of construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. Auguste Ricard de Montferrand (1786-1858) - French architect became famous in Russia, author of several important architectural monuments of the city, the most famous of which is St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg (built from 1818 to 1858) on the banks of the Neva. Completed during the reign of Alexander II, St. Isaac's was built with the best materials and engineers of the time. The 36 granite columns were quarried in Finland. Auguste Ricard de Montferrand developed very elaborate techniques for their transportation and installation. The first column was erected on March 20, 1828. The interior walls and pillars were completed in 1836 and it was not until 1848 that the gilding of the dome was finished. It would take another ten years for the whole thing to be completed. The result is in keeping with the aspirations of the emperor and the ambitions of the architect who wanted his cathedral to be compared to the most sumptuous of all, such as Saint Peter's in Rome or Saint Paul's in London. After 39 years of work, Alexander II inaugurated the cathedral on May 30, 1858. George Kousheleff-Bezborodko (1832 - 1870) - Russian aristocrat, patron of the arts, composer, chess player and writer. Known for his charity projects, George Kousheleff-Bezborodko was also one of the great bibliophiles of the time. After his death, his library and collection of paintings were bequeathed to Count A.Moussin-Pushkin (husband of G.Kousheleff-Bezborodko's sister), then the library was dispersed, the collection of paintings was donated to the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.
