1973 MASERATI "Serial number 1812 Nice condition Rare 4.9L version American Title, customs cleared FFVE file A new wind was blowing at Maserati as it entered the 1970s. Indeed, wishing to replace its Sebring model, the brand with the Trident unveiled the Indy in 1968 at the Turin Motor Show; the design marks a clear difference with its predecessor and shows a beautiful interpretation of this new design with taut, almost cubic lines. The result was a sleek and aggressive coupé with retractable lights and a roofline high enough to accommodate two extra seats compared to its big sister, the Maserati Gibhli. The body design was entrusted to Vignale, who ventured to propose a rear hatch with a virtually flat window that gave the car the appearance of an estate car. The name Indy is not insignificant for Maserati and refers to the brand's victories on the Indianapolis circuit in 1939 and 1940. The Italian firm is playing with its sporting past and, by imposing this name on the back of the car, promises owners a pleasant drive and real sensations. Coupled with the noble engines dear to Maserati, the 8 V-cylinders with increasing displacements depending on the finish, the car is indeed sporty without being boring and is a good compromise between comfort, power and efficiency. Opening the large driver's door reveals a warm and luxurious interior in stretched leather, often in dark colours with a beautiful wooden steering wheel. The seats, although comfortable, offer a good support and allow you to swallow the kilometres without going to the osteopath the next day; many dials and a huge ashtray (Italian car obliges) finish the dashboard on which is written Maserati in chrome letters. A 5-speed ZF manual gearbox is fitted as standard in the Indy, it was preferred to the optional 3-speed automatic gearbox which breaks the car's sporting temperament; the options are numerous: car radio, electric window regulator... The 4.2L, 4.7L and 4.9L V8 engines are fitted with 4 overhead camshafts and 4 Weber 42 carburettors, they develop from 260 to 330 horsepower but have a lot of torque to spare with a bewitching sound without going for the red zone of the rev counter, ideal for cruising and frank takeovers on small country roads as well as on motorways. If the Indy is conceived more as a GT and not as a pure sports car, it is not devoid of sensations, the driving position, the line, the engine make it a desirable car today and which stands out enormously from the great classics of the collection car. A European version that spent most of its life in the United States, the model we present is a rare 4.9L manual transmission version. Imported in France in 2020, it has undergone some restoration work such as a mechanical overhaul, hydraulic spheres, starter hydraulic spheres, starter and braking system. The interior was also treated with the refurbishment of the front seats and the top of the dashboard in alcantara. A test drive demonstrated the car's overall smooth running, lulled by the smooth and expressive purr of the V8. However, a mechanical overhaul is necessary in order to be able to take to the road with peace of mind.  The exterior features a red paint job stretched across the bodywork with a few details to be reviewed without marring the overall aesthetics. Rare and elegant, the Indy is a nice alternative to the Ghibli with the same mechanicals and taking advantage of Citroën's handling and braking. "
