1960 MERCEDES-BENZ - Lot 48
1960 MERCEDES-BENZ "Chassis number: 1210401000304 Good cosmetic and mechanical condition Iconic model Unveiled to the New York public and the world press in 1954, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was designed to be a smaller version of the 300 SL. Derived from the well-known star model, this roadster was produced in close collaboration with Max Hoffman, then Mercedes-Benz importer in the USA. The car was powered by a 4-cylinder in-line engine of 1897 cm3 developing 105 HP. The engine is coupled to a 4-speed manual gearbox. The chassis is based on an independent front suspension and rear swing axles with coil springs. Braking is provided by four hydraulically operated drum brakes. Designed by Karl Wilfert and Walter Hackert, the car was to resemble its big sister the 300SL but was to be 30 cm shorter. The chassis was borrowed from the modest 180 saloon, which was shortened by 25 cm. The body was made of steel, but the four doors, the boot and the bonnet were made of aluminium. No fewer than 25,881 units were produced, and the car appealed to businessmen and stars alike. After a busy life on the streets of the world and in competition, the 190 and 300 SL convertibles were replaced in 1963 by a new car in the intermediate range, the the 230 SL Pagoda, which was positioned in the middle range. Doug Steane, a driver at the time, took part in the Macau 5-hour race in China in the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL. He won the 1956 race against many other sports cars of the time in the GT class. This Mercedes-Benz 190 SL left the German factory in 1960. It is in very good condition. The bodywork is rust free, leaving a beautiful bright red paint. A nice little roadster with an elegant black cloth top in good condition. You will probably appreciate the chrome strip that separates the top of the bonnet from the rear window. The other chrome parts of the car, bumpers, strips and logos, are also gleaming. Under the bonnet is a 4-cylinder engine in good condition. It starts and runs well. Inside, the dashboard matches the car's paint. The black leather upholstery has a slight patina. This car is perfect for long walks along the seaside and will delight passers-by who look at it."
