GEOFFROY-SAINT-HILAIRE (Étienne). Autograph... - Lot 236 - Osenat
GEOFFROY-SAINT-HILAIRE (Étienne). Autograph manuscript signed entitled "Marsupials". [ca. 1823]. 54 ff. in-4, paginated 1 to 22, 22 bis, 22 ter, 23 to 52; all in paperback. TREATY PUBLISHED IN 1823 IN THE DICTIONARY OF NATURAL SCIENCES (vol. XXIX, Paris and Strasbourg, F. G. Levrault, and Paris, Le Normant, pp. 205-244). The naturalist tells the story of the discovery of the different species of marsupials (opossums, kangaroos, etc.), then unfolds a long anatomical study. Defending the idea of the unity of the living world, Étienne Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire was the first to consider as a rare form of normality what others considered as a teratological case, a monstrosity apart, and thus to integrate into the normal classification the "didelphic" animals (with a double uterine cavity) that are marsupials. PIONEER IN COMPARED ANATOMY, EMBRYOLOGY, PALEONTOLOGY, TERATOLOGY, THE NATURALIST ÉTIENNE GEOFFROY-SAINT-HILAIRE (1772-1844) developed a "theory of analogues", and thus paved the way for Darwin's theories on the origin of species and natural selection. He was a member of the Egyptian expedition.
