SET OF THREE mahogany and mahogany veneer... - Lot 236 - Osenat
SET OF THREE mahogany and mahogany veneer chairs with upside down backs decorated with openwork palmettes and scrolls, the straight belts. It rests on front legs in hock of animal and back legs arched. Stamped Jacob Frères. Inventory number in black stencil C 931? and fire marks of the Château de Compiègne surmounted by a crown and of the Palais des Tuileries under the Restoration. Consulate period H: 90 - W: 44 - D: 51 cm It is upholstered in old tapestry with polychrome decoration in medallions of garlands of flowers. Restorations, small lack. Provenance: Former collection Le Fuel and remained in its descent These chairs, originally enhanced with gold are part of the eight chairs ordered to Jacob Frères for the service of the Executive Directory (Luxembourg Palace) in the pavilion of the Sunset. They were used in the bedroom of General Bonaparte in the Tuileries around 1799 1, then in 1808 they were sent to the bedroom of the prince's double apartment in the Château de Compiègne, which under the Restoration became the grand bedroom of the Duke and Duchess of Berry. They are then shared between the castle of Compiègne and the wing of Trianon -sous-Bois 2. Jean-Pierre Samoyault describes one of a series of six chairs with identical backs and tapered legs, slightly balustered, probably ordered for the service of the Executive Directory (Luxembourg Palace) and then placed in the library of Madame Bonaparte in the Tuileries Palace around 1799, now preserved in the Château de Fontainebleau 3.
