AUGUSTE XAVIER LEPRINCE (PARIS 1799 - NICE 1826) The village wedding, The market Pair of canvas and stretcher (Giroux in Paris) Height : 49 cm Width : 65 cm The village wedding is signed and dated on the boat "A.X Leprince 1825" The market is signed and dated at the bottom left "a x / Leprince 1825" Provenance : Charles Balaÿ's, Lyon, in 1986 Auguste Xavier LEPRINCE comes from a family of landscape painters. His work can be compared to that of Louis-Léopold Boilly, for his taste for modern subjects and for picturesque details. He won his first medal at the 1819 Salon. In 1824, Auguste Xavier Leprince stayed with Eugène Isabey in Honfleur. At the 1824 Salon, the Duchess of Berry bought The Skaters and at the 1826 Salon, Charles X became the owner of two paintings, The Embarkation of Cattle in the Passage to Honfleur and The Passage to Susten. Our two paintings date from a year before his death from a chest illness. The Salon of 1827 will pay homage to him.
