CHARLES MEYNIER (1768-1832), ENTOURAGE OF... - Lot 220 - Osenat
CHARLES MEYNIER (1768-1832), ENTOURAGE OF Allegory of war & allegory of strength Two oil on canvas, marouflaged. (Lifting and missing). 54 x 145,5 cm - 52 x 145 cm Provenance : By tradition, these two door tops would come from the Rinuccini Palace of Madam Mother in Rome. Biography : Charles MEYNIER, born in Paris on November 24, 1768 and died in Paris on September 6, 1832, is a French neo-classical painter. A student of François-André Vincent, he won a second Grand Prix de Rome in 1789. We owe him drawings for the bas-reliefs and statues of the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. He was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts from 1816. Meynier's talent consisted of a perfect knowledge of anatomical forms, a great art of painting nudes and an excellent mastery of ceiling painting, both in terms of picturesque layout and aerial perspective. Meynier did not have the fame he would have deserved. He had a painting studio in his home devoted exclusively to women, and he counted Louise Hersent among his students. He was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on November 7, 1819, replacing Jean-Jacques Lagrenée. His successor was Merry-Joseph Blondel in 1832. He died on September 6, 1832, victim of cholera, as did his wife who had also been struck by it a few days earlier.
