VITON DE SAINT-ALLAIS (NICOLAS). Chronological,... - Lot 189 - Osenat
VITON DE SAINT-ALLAIS (NICOLAS). Chronological, genealogical and political history of the House of Baden. In Paris, with the author, Millet, Arthus Bertrand, 1807. One volume (of 2) in-8, (4)-251-(1 blank)-47-(1 blank) pp, red morocco, spine smoothly decorated, frieze comprising notably scrolls of palmettes framing the boards with the figure "A" crowned in the center, filleted edges, interior framing of the same leather decorated with a gilt roulette, blue moire linings framed with a gilt frieze, blue silk endpapers, gilt edges (Bound by v[euv]e Gueffier, rue Gallande n. 61. The iron with the crowned "A" adorning the center of the boards is absent from OHR: the crown was gilded on an adventitious piece of leather, and, initially ducal, was modified into a closed sovereign crown afterwards. Perhaps it is the figure of Amelie of Hesse-Darmstadt, widow of Charles-Louis of Baden (son of Grand Duke Charles I of Baden), or that of Amelie of Baden, daughter of Grand Duke Charles I of Baden. The House of Baden was a powerful aristocratic family, but it was Napoleon I who elevated the elector to the rank of grand duke when the Confederation of the Rhine was established. At the same time, he organized a marriage between Stephanie of Beauharnais, whom he adopted at the time, and the crown prince of the Crown of Baden. The latter would ascend to the throne in 1811. Provenance: BERTHIER FAMILY (ex-libris vignette with mark, from the library of the château de Grosbois). THE HOUSE OF BAD REGNA IN THE 15th CENTURY OVER NEUCHATEL, AS WELL AS LOUIS-ALEXANDRE BERTHIER BETWEEN 1806 AND 1814. The present volume includes a short note on the latter.
