Biography: Hugues Bernard MARET, 1st Duke of Bassano (1763-1839) Son of Hugues Maret, a doctor whose family had been established in Dijon for a long time, and younger brother of Jean Philibert, engineer of bridges and roads, Hugues-Bernard was a lawyer at the Burgundy Parliament, then settled in Paris in 1788. Fascinated by the events of the beginning of the Revolution, he followed with attention the debates of the Constituent Assembly, of which he published, with his colleague Étienne Mejan, an objective summary under the name of Bulletin de l'Assemblée which was inserted in Le Moniteur universel. A Jacobin, he was one of the founders of the Club des Feuillants. In July 1793, he was appointed ambassador to Naples. Prisoner in Austria, he was exchanged for Marie-Thérèse of France, daughter of Louis XVI. Negotiator in Lille with Great Britain, he was sidelined until Napoleon Bonaparte's return from Egypt. Appointed Secretary of State under the Consulate, Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1811 to 1813, Napoleon I made him Count of the Empire on May 3, 1809,
