L.A.S FROM NICOLAS MANCHES CALLED "SENECHAL"... - Lot 138 - Osenat
L.A.S FROM NICOLAS MANCHES CALLED "SENECHAL" ADDRESSED TO HIS MAJESTY THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON I. One page dated March 22, 1815, signed "Sénéchal" He reminds that he has been in his service for 12 years as a valet de chambre, and that he has done all his campaigns ("the one of Moskou having destroyed his health"). He asks for a place as concierge of the Louvre or as bailiff, as a reward for his services. 31 x 20 cm. Framed under glass. B.E. (Not framed). The personal service of the Emperor consisted of four valets who were for a long time Constant, Sénéchal, Pelard and Hubert. Constant was the first valet and therefore in direct contact with the Emperor. Sénéchal was his deputy. Constant tells an anecdote: "One day the Emperor asked for tea in the middle of the day. Mr. Sénéchal was on duty, he made some, and presented it to His Majesty, who found it detestable. I was called, the emperor complained to me that they wanted to poison him. (This was his word, when he found something distasteful.) Returning to the office, I poured from the same teapot a cup that I arranged, and brought it to His Majesty, with two vermeil spoons, according to the custom, one to taste in front of the emperor, the other for him. This time he found the tea excellent, complimented me with the benevolent familiarity he sometimes deigned to use towards his servants, and giving me back the cup, he tugged at my ears and said: "But teach them how to make tea, they don't know anything about it".
