LUCIEN PIERRE SERGENT (1849-1904) The Rest... - Lot 50 - Osenat
LUCIEN PIERRE SERGENT (1849-1904) The Rest of the French Troops during the Battle of Essling Oil on panel 98 x 155 cm Signed lower right: L Sergent 1893 Bears a mention "H.C" on the frame in the upper center meaning that the painting was surely presented at the 1893 Salon, Hors Concours. It was during the battle of Essling, also called the battle of Aspern, that the French troops confronted the Austrian troops, 10 km from Vienna, from May 20 to 22, 1809. The Austrians, allied with Russia, saw this as an opportunity for revenge for their difficult defeat at Austerlitz in 1805. The artist chose to capture a key moment of the battle, that of the French army's rest before a new assault: the soldiers, exhausted, stand as best they can in line while the bodies of some of the wounded lie at their feet on the muddy path. Two generals sitting on a hill in front of the army seem to be watching for an imminent intervention of the enemy. Lucien Pierre Sergent made a specialty of military painting. Active during the second half of the 19th century, he depicted the most important battles of the century including those of Marengo, Friedland and Waterloo. In Vizille, the Museum of the French Revolution holds a work by the artist: Combat de Bagneux, October 13, 1870.
