REICHSTADT (Napoleon François Charles Joseph... - Lot 35 - Osenat
REICHSTADT (Napoleon François Charles Joseph Bonaparte, duke of). Autograph letter signed "François", in French, addressed TO HER MOTHER MARIE-LOUISE, former empress turned duchess of Parma. Vienna, March 7, 1829. 3 pp. in-4, date scratched and corrected: "My dear Mother! Your letter of February 21 caused me much joy and I thank you very much. I often think of the General, of his friendship for me, and being occupied with you my pain redoubles. How much I would like to give you better consolation myself than my faulty letters, which you nevertheless accept with your usual indulgence. I have seen Gustave and Ervin [two children of General von Neipperg, from a first marriage] who are bearing this terrible misfortune with great resignation. The emperor [Francis I of Austria], who has been in bed for six days to prevent a severe chest cold, has risen and resumed the ordinary course of his occupations. The Hereditary Prince [the future Ferdinand I, elder brother of Marie-Louise] was attacked yesterday morning by one of his attacks of nerves, several of which you were present at, my dear Mother, and which deprived him of his voice for a few moments. The doctors applied six leeches to his neck and drew 10 ounces of blood to reduce the dizziness. Today he is better, but I bet he will not get up soon. Archduchess Sophie [wife of Marie-Louise's younger brother, François-Charles], who spent the last few days of Carnival in bed because of a cold, is getting up today. Mr. Foresti [Captain Giovanni-Battista Foresti, one of the governors of the Duke of Reichstadt] is already walking on his sick foot, which he still feels very weak, but Mr. Obenauss [one of his tutors, Joseph von Obenaus] is undergoing a new quarantine, because his eldest daughter has caught measles. I kiss your hands, my dear Mother, and beg you to take care of your health and to think sometimes of your most obedient son François." AUSTRIAN GENERAL ADAM ALBERT VON NEIPPERG (1775-1829), who had served in Marengo and Leipzig, also led important diplomatic missions. In 1815 he was charged with watching over Marie-Louise so that she would not attempt to join her husband, and followed her to her duchy of Parma where he participated in the governance. He became her lover, had four children and, shortly after the death of Napoleon I, married her. Provenance: Robert Schuman collection. ATTACHED: - A DRAWING REPRESENTING A PORTRAIT OF THE DUKE OF REICHSTADT ON HIS DEATHBED (pen and brown ink, 16 x 18 cm, framed under glass with marie-louise). On the verso of the frame, an inscription mentions the Austrian painter Johann Ender, and a label indicates: "ancienne collection d'Harville". - a minute of a letter in French from the administrator of the House of the Duke of Reichstadt. Vienna, November 1831. Concerning the finances of the prince and the allowance that he receives to hold his rank.
