LANNES (Jean). Autograph letter signed to... - Lot 24 - Osenat
LANNES (Jean). Autograph letter signed to his father-in-law François-Scholastique Guéheneuc. Lisbon, "17 messidor" [6 July 1804]. 2 pp. in-4, address on the back: "I received your letter... that you made me pass by the courier that Mr. de Souza [the ambassador of Portugal in France, José Maria de Souza Boutelho, who had married in 1802 Adélaïde Filleul, former mistress of Talleyrand and widow of the count de Flahaut] sent to his Government. I also received that of Marshal Murat, I had already announced to him the new credentials for Mr. de Souza, I sent a copy to the Minister of [Foreign] Relations in Paris [Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord]. Mr. de Lima [Tomás José Xavier de Lima, ambassador extraordinary in Paris, charged with congratulating Napoleon I on his elevation to the imperial throne] has left, and is only going to Paris to compliment the emperor; he is ambassador in Madrid. I have informed you of his departure on a frigate. Louise [Louise Guéhenneuc, wife of Marshal Lannes] is taking advantage of this to be at the Emperor's coronation. I do not hide from you... that I am very angry that they are putting so much effort into supporting a wretch who has done everything he could to lose me, I am not fooled by all these intrigues. I have received a new letter of credence as minister. I would have expected to receive them as ambassador, if I had not known less about the man with whom I am dealing. Besides... I am decided to retire quietly if all this does not end, I am tired of being obliged to always fight with intrigue, I LOVE BONAPARTE, I DEFEND HIS INTERESTS OF HEART AND SOUL, I ONLY SEE HIS GLORY. I HAVE ALWAYS SPILLED MY BLOOD WITH PLEASURE FOR HIM, if with this feeling, some wretches [o]felt to upset you again, I do not see that one can have more patience... " LANNES AMBASSADOR TO PORTUGAL. Marshal Lannes had been appointed on November 14, 1801 in Lisbon as minister plenipotentiary and envoy extraordinary: he arrived there on March 25, 1802, and remained in post from this date to August 10, 1802 then from March 12, 1803 to August 1, 1804. He had a lot to do because of the strong presence of the English, the personality of their minister in Portugal, Lord Robert Fitzgerald, and the maneuvers of the Regent who gave him all the appearances of friendship: Jean de Bragance made sumptuous gifts to Lannes and accepted to be the godfather of one of his sons. FUTURE SENATOR AND COUNT OF EMPIRE, FRANÇOIS-SCHOLASTIQUE GUEHENNEUC (1759-1840) came from the small Breton nobility. He was first employed in the administration of hospitals under the Ancien Régime and then in the administration of Water and Forests under the Revolution. His son-in-law Jean Lannes having become a marshal, and his son Louis Guéhenneuc having become aide-de-camp to Napoleon I, he saw his career greatly favored.
