THE PAINFUL EXILE OF THE IMPERATRESS L.A.S... - Lot 361 - Osenat
THE PAINFUL EXILE OF THE IMPERATRESS L.A.S from the Empress Eugenie to the admiral DUPERRE on August 6 "Worth's birthday" (1871 or 1872). 8 pages in-8. The Empress, very dignified, learns of some reverses of fortune: the furniture of her cabinet that she believed to be in the storage room, was burned. She also learns that the liquidation of the civil list leaves her without anything, the Empress not having a marriage contract. (A judgment will end up recovering her property after trial). She would also like to see her mother, who is ill, and intends to ask Mr. Thiers for a passport. She notes "It is said that every day has its own punishment, but there are days that count double" A transcription of the letter is attached. Attached is a cabinet size photograph by Downey, depicting the Empress praying in mourning attire. Provenance : Former collection Jean Jacques Arnna
