IMPERATRICE EUGENIE'S LIBRARY The Enemies of the House. Comedy in three acts, in verse. [Without place or date, circa 1850], manuscript of [2] ff. 119 pp. bound in one vol. in - 4(270 x 215 mm), green silk velvet of the period, gilt fillet in frame, bee at the corners, arms in the center of the upper board, smooth spine, white moire lining and endpapers, gilt edges. Carefully calligraphed manuscript in brown ink of a play by Camille Doucet (1812 - 1895). Man of letters and bibliophile, the author was director of the Theaters in 1863, academician in 1865 and perpetual secretary of the French Academy in 1876. His play Les Ennemis de la Maison was performed in 1850 and published by Lévy in 1851. It deals lightly with love misunderstandings in a united family. - Absent from Soleinne. The manuscript was calligraphed and bound for the Empress Eugenie: her arms appear on the upper cover, with the coats of arms of the Empire and of the Countess of Montijo. - Olivier, Hermal and Roton, plate 2660 fer 2. A note dated Pontoise, July 1, 1881 and signed. J. Mairet, senior clerk at the Ministry of Finance is pasted on the first blank page: I give this comedy to Charles Mairet. It belonged to the Prince, son of Napoleon III, who died in the Zulu war. In memory. - The dry stamp J.M. appears on the title page. - Spine redone. provenance: ex-libris collection Gérard Souham
