GRAND PLAN DES ENVIRONS DE PARIS surveyed geometrically by M. l'ABBÉ DE LA GRIVE of the Royal Society of London and geographer of the city of Paris. Dedicated to M. LE MARQUIS DE VATAN, Provost of the merchants and the aldermen of the city in 1740. The scale is 50 lines per thousand toises. Height 177 cm - Width 255 cm Jean Delagrive (1689 -1757) was a French Lazarist priest, known for his contributions to cartography and geometry. He was the official geographer of Michel Turgot (1690-1751), Provost of the merchants of Paris, and a member of the Royal Society of London. He was in charge of mapping the course of the Seine and its tributaries. He collaborated with César-François Cassini on the determination of the meridian of the Paris Observatory. Published in 1730 (Paris sheet) and 1740 (other sheets), his colored work on Les Environs de Paris Levés géométriquement includes nine 84 x 58 cm sheets. With Paris at its center, it covers an area from north to south from Montmorency to Palaiseau, and from west to east from Saint-Germain-en-Laye to Champs-sur-Marne. It is one of the first accurate and very detailed representations of the villages, abbeys, castles, farms, roads and paths surrounding the city of Paris.
