CUP ON FOOT in finely chased and gilded bronze,... - Lot 216 - Osenat
CUP ON FOOT in finely chased and gilded bronze, the shaft formed by three women draped in the antique style, they rest on a frieze base of acanthus leaves. Base and cup in Egyptian porphyry. H.?: 17 cm, D.?: 12,5 cm With their triple female caryatid stems, our bowl has similarities with a model attributed to Jean-Démosthène Dugourc (1749-1825) in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This drawing was included in an album of designs for furniture later delivered to Madame Elizabeth and the Count of Provence. It is also inscribed "Designed by J. D. Dugourc, architect and designer of the Cabinet of Monsieur Frère Du Roi" (the brother of Louis XVI). The album features drawings, many of which reflect an interest in the Arabic and Etruscan styles that were in vogue in the early 1780's. Despite the differences between the various models, it can be assumed that the original design of this type of caryatid is due to Jean Démosthène Dugourc. Dugourc was one of the most famous French designers working in the field of ornamentation during the second half of the eighteenth century
